The Medical Coding Specialist Certificate Program of Southern University at Shreveport prepares students for an entry level position as a coder in an acute care hospital, ambulatory care, physician office, and other health care settings. 

Dedicated to excellence in education, this program fosters a learning environment through the enhancement of technical competency skills and critical thinking skills utilizing a wide range of instructional methodologies.

The courses offered in the Medical Coding Specialist certificate curriculum provide the student with the entry level skills and technical knowledge needed to code, classify, and index diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement purposes, standardization, retrieval, and statistical analysis. The curriculum combines the classroom setting, web-enhanced/online coursework, work in a simulated laboratory, and hands-on experience in the clinical setting.

The Medical Coding Specialist and Health Information Technology Programs will begin accepting applications for the 2017. 

1st Round Applications will be accepted from students applying to the clinical phase of the HIT / Medical Coding Specialist Programs beginning April 3, 2017 – May 8, 2017. 

2nd Round Applications will be accepted from students beginning May 9, 2017 through August 14, 2017 in the event of any remaining clinical program slots.
