Inaugural YouthBuild Shreveport Class Celebrates Graduation

The inaugural class of the Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) YouthBuild Shreveport Program observed graduation exercises on Thursday, October 22 at the Hilton Downtown Shreveport.  Dr. R. Timothy Jones, pastor of the Peaceful Rest Baptist Church served as keynote speaker for the event, which honored fourteen (14) graduates this year.  The Fuller Center of Northwest Louisiana also presented the YouthBuild Shreveport program with a check in the amount of $12,124.

Funded in part by a generous award from the US Department of Labor and community partners, the YouthBuild program trains youth ages 16 to 24 who have not completed high school or may be part of a disadvantaged youth population.  YouthBuild is a broad based initiative that affords at-risk students the opportunity to earn their HiSET degree and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) construction certification through traditional classroom experiences and service learning projects.   YouthBuild Shreveport will assist over 60 students over the next 3 years.

“SUSLA’s YouthBuild Shreveport program graduates will be equipped with the professional skills and tools necessary to lead successful lives, further their educational skills, and develop life skills necessary to navigate a pathway to self-sufficiency and responsibility,” said Janice Sneed, SUSLA Vice Chancellor for Community and Workforce Development.

In addition to the classroom curriculum, YouthBuild students have participated in several hands on projects, including the revitalization of the library at the YouthBuild program site (formerly Newton Smith Elementary) and E-Z Living Park, located in the Martin Luther King, Jr. neighborhood.  In partnership with the Fuller Center for Housing NWLA, YouthBuild students also assisted with the building of four homes, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

SUSLA currently partners with the City of Shreveport, Capital One Bank, Caddo Parish Commission, Image Changers, Inc, The Fuller Center for Housing Northwest Louisiana, Goodwill Industries, the Association of General Contractors, the National Association of Minority Contractors and others to enhance the lives and skills of YBS participants.
